Malibu vs. Honda Accord

Executive Summary

The 2021 Chevy Malibu and the 2021 Honda Accord are both well-rounded midsize cars with spacious interiors, strong fuel economy, good cargo space, and are designed with comfort in mind. Both vehicles look to stand out in this competitive field, so the differences are always going to show out in the details. Which of these two sedans will come out on top? Check out why we think that the Malibu offers the superior driving experience.

When it comes to the most important factors in a mid-size sedan, the Malibu and the Fusion are very similar in size. They have roughly the same amount of passenger space, have very similar wheelbases, and are roughly the same when it comes to overall dimensions. All-in-all, we think that it's a tie for key dimensions.

Powertrain and Fuel Economy

The 2021 Honda Accord offers a 1.5L 4 cylinder engine, standard, as well as a 2L  engine variant at higher price points. The standard engine offers 192 horsepower. The '21 Malibu offers a standard 1.5 L 4-cylinder engine with a second 2 L variation available. It gets up to 29mpg city and 36 mpg highway (although in practice, we regularly see as high as 40 mpg highway on long drives) while the Accord offers up to 33 mpg city and 38 highway.

We believe that when it comes to affordable mid-size sedans, for the price, the Chevy Malibu stacks up very well next to the Accord. It's 15.8 (one gallon more than the Accord) gallon tank makes it more than a match for the gas mileage of its rival at Honda.

Comfort and Technology

When it comes to a more comfortable ride, the Malibu offers a more serene ride than the Honda Accord. The Malibu is as quiet as mid-sized sedans come, with an excellent suspension and noise cancelling technology built into the vehicle. For driving down Poplar Ave, we think that there's no more comfortable sedan on the market than the 2021 Chevy Malibu.

Technology also comes as a strength of the Malibu. Safety tech like Intellibeam automatic high-beams, automatic emergency braking, and various cross traffic alerts come available on the all new Malibu. The 2021 Chevy Malibu even comes with available Automatic parking assist -- great for getting into tight spaces in downtown Memphis.
